| The NIU Foundation A separate legal entity from the university, the NIU Foundation exists solely to further the university's interests. It is a nonprofit organization responsible for securing and managing private gifts made to support Northern's mission. An elected Board of Directors establishes policy and reviews the activities of the Foundation. The Foundation is designated by the university's Board of Trustees as the official gift receiving entity.
